Alumni Weekend held September 2

by Andrew Chew and Jacob Sloan

On September 2, 2006, the brothers of the Texas Chapter hosted an Alumni Weekend Post-Game Tailgate at 2614 to christen the new residence. This Saturday was an integral part of our fall recruitment because the brothers felt that it would provide ample opportunity for the alumni to see our recruitment process and also provide rushees the chance to see what being in Acacian could offer as an undergraduate and beyond.

Upon hearing about the proposed event, Walter Demond, “some kind of officer” in the Acacia Alumni Association, insisted that he would have the Acacia Alumni Association foot the bill for the event. All the actives appreciated the generous donation and used the money to fund a fajita cookout immediately following the game. Alumni from several decades of the Texas Chapter made it over to 2614 including alumni from as early as the 1970s. In total, more than 15 alumni came to greet and congratulate the chapter for all of their hard work including many that were unable to attend our re-chartering ceremony in May. Many alumni were able to visit their old rooms and reminisce about their undergraduate years in 2514. They also shared with us how different the house has become since the days that they had lived there along with how they used to handle chapter operations. The actives were as eager to hear about the Acacia of old as the rushees.

The evening continued as more and more alumni came by for a brief visit and a bite to eat. Sadly, we found out after planning the event that September 2 was also the first day of quail season, so several of the alumni who have been highly involved with our re-colonization and re-chartering were unable to attend. Still, we are thankful for all those alumni who were present because the event only furthered our discovery of how important the fraternity is and how important our connection with the alumni is to us.
